Interview with Luka

Luka Grubor, 31, took his first sailing trip at the age of ten; now with an MBE under his belt for rowing for Britain at the Sydney Olympics he’s evangelical about converting everyone else

Interview with Luka, Sail Croatia DirectorDo you remember the first sailing trip you took?
It was the most memorable holiday of my life. No, really! Those three weeks around the Kornati archipelago got me hooked.

Why? What was so special?
I’ll never forget the moment when the skipper turned off the engine and we heard nothing but the breeze and the creaking and straining of ropes as the boat surged on. Even now, it gives me a thrill.

Weren’t you a bit young for three weeks aboard a boat?
Never! There was always something exciting to do: learning to do knots and pulling sheets and helping the skipper. And then of course we swam and snorkeled and explored.

Which are your favourite bits of the coast?
I’m torn. I love to sail the 110 or so islands of the Kornati archipelago but then I also like Vis.

Why?
The food is delicious and the atmosphere is really lively. Vis is full of history too, and geographically it’s amazing: Komiza bay was actually the crater of a volcano once.

Favourite dishes?
There’s something irresistible about Croatian kebabs. Black risotto’s good too – especially the Rokis on Vis.

What do you offer that other sailing operations don’t?
Our service: we can give you all the information you’ll need down to restaurant phone numbers in advance, so you don’t waste time on holiday. We own our boats, so they’re immaculate. And our friendly crews – that’s really important.

Does everyone need to hire a crew?
Not if you can sail! It depends whether you want to head out into the blue on your own, or just relax and sit back.
