Way of Life

Croatia Travel Guides - History of Croatia

The coastal areas of Croatia are renowned for their laid-back attitude and their ‘Mediterranean’ lifestyle, making this a relaxed holiday destination. The Croatians appreciate the finer things in life and are fortunate to have the great combination of beautiful scenery, a warm summer climate and bountiful natural resources.

Food is extremely important in Croatia and the country has a growing reputation for its organic farming and wide variety of fresh, local produce. There are 2 main types of restaurant – the smarter restaurants and the more traditional konoba or tavern but you’re just as likely to get a magnificent seafood stew at a tiny local inn as at one of the cosmopolitan gourmet hotspots in Dubrovnik or Split. It’s not just that the ingredients are fresh and tasty; it’s also the way they’re cooked. Fish is often taken straight from the sea to a wood-fired grill. Lamb, strewn with handfuls of locally grown herbs, might be slow-cooked all day. Salads are harvested from local sun-drenched farms.

Croatia has also been a winegrowing region for centuries since Greek and Roman times. There are many award winning Vineyards to visit and sample the delicious wines. Many of the Vintners dry cure their own hams so you can taste their prized prsut (prosciutto) as well as the fruits of their labours from their cherished vines.

Although Croatia has its share of large, fun-filled resorts, most of the country is still unspoilt, with hidden gems waiting to be shared with those who wish to spend the time finding them. Choose from small guesthouses in isolated bays, with only the sound of waves for company, grand villas tucked away in olive groves or boutique hotels situated in pretty bays. And for the sailor in you, there’s a mass of blue sea on which to evade civilisation, cruise and feel the wind on your face. No wonder it’s been a secret haunt for international stars for so long!

And the people? The Croatians are warm and friendly, and keen to share the beauty of their county with you. Ready to pack your bags?
